Hogan announces plan to replace Harry Nice bridge

MARYLAND
Hogan has a plan
to replace Nice bridge
Gov. Larry Hogan (R) has announced plans to replace the Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge in Southern Maryland, saying his administration found a faster and less expensive way to do it than what Democratic legislative leaders had proposed.
The $765 million Potomac River crossing would open in 2023 and would be paid for with toll revenue. It would be north of the existing bridge, which is 1.7 miles and has one lane of traffic in each direction. The new bridge will have two lanes in each direction and a barrier-separated bicycle and pedestrian path.
The General Assembly passed legislation this year requiring the state to set aside $26 million annually for a replacement bridge that would open by 2030. Hogan vetoed it. The veto could be overturned.

Del. Bell quits race for attorney general
A Republican state legislator on Monday dropped out of next year’s race for Virginia attorney general, an office he had sought in the previous election cycle. He cited paternal responsibilities.

Del. Rob B. Bell (R-Albemarle) unsuccessfully sought the GOP nomination in 2013. After Democrat Mark R. Herring won the office in that year’s general election, Bell decided to try again.
Bell had competition for the GOP nomination from John Adams, a former federal prosecutor now at the Richmond law firm of McGuireWoods.
Bell has two young children, one of whom has special needs.
“Despite my best efforts,” he said, “ it has become clear to me that I can’t possibly fulfill my responsibilities as a father while making a statewide run.”
